Seven-under through the first nine holes with five birdies and a 40-foot eagle, he admitted to thoughts of a sub-60.
That he managed only three birdies and also dropped a bogey meant he finished at nine-under 63, which saw him leapfrog from the second last place the previous day to third after the second day with a 10-shot improvement on his first day's score of 73.
Reed is now tied third alongside Justin Rose (64) &mdash; two behind leader, Jordan Spieth, and one behind Henrik Stenson. Spieth was the man Reed beat in a play-off for his first PGA Tour title and Stenson was the man he beat in the Sunday Singles at 2014 Ryder Cup.
On Friday, Reed turned up for first-time pairing with Tiger Woods in the 'Woods-like' red and black colours that immediately attracted attention. Reed said, "I never played with Tiger before besides in a practice rounds at the British.
It was good to finally be able to play with him, especially in competition. It was a lot of fun. We had a good time. I felt like we enjoyed ourselves out there, and luckily I played well." That's an understatement &mdash; he beat Woods by seven shots!
