In the ever so competitive world of modern tennis, it is rare to find friendships. That&rsquo;s precisely why World No 1 Serena Williams&rsquo; bond with World No 8 Caroline Wozniacki is special.

Wozniacki has been through some tough times off court, what with her ex-fiance and professional golfer Rory McIlroy breaking off their engagement last May. Wozniacki (24) described how Williams (33) has been her shoulder to cry on in trying times.

True friendship &ldquo;When you go through hard times, you find out who your true friends are, and Serena Williams was one of the first people to be there for me when my engagement unraveled last spring,&rdquo; wrote Wozniacki while nominating Williams for the 2014 Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year Award. Wozniacki went on to explain how the American&rsquo;s advice helped her keep calm during the emotionally draining incident.
&ldquo;Serena didn&rsquo;t have to support me. She has her own life, her own problems and her own career to worry about, but she was there when I needed someone to lean on the most. We talked on the phone, and she said it was going to be hard to recover, but that when I did get to the other side, I was going to be a stronger person. And now I am,&rdquo; added Wozniacki.
Wozniacki stressed on the American&rsquo;s honesty. &ldquo;Serena is always concerned about her family and friends. She is true to her word and never changes her personality for anyone. She has always remained consistent, and I think that is really admirable,&rdquo; wrote Wozniacki and went onto explain Williams&rsquo; charity work.
The award however went to Major League Baseball pitcher Madison Bumgarner of San Francisco Giants.
