World No 113 Devvarman got past his 175th-ranked opponent 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in a match lasting two hours and 15 minutes on Friday. The Indian plays 85th-ranked Lukas Lacko of Slovakia in the opening round at Flushing Meadows.

Devvarman had to win three matches to advance in the last Grand Slam of the year. He on Thursday beat American Robby Ginepri, a former semifinalist here.
