Pavin, a three-time Ryder Cup player, forgot to introduce 2009 British Open champion Stewart Cink as he presented his 12-man team to the crowd and assembled dignitaries.

Pavin had to be told by several of the team of his blunder leading him to backtrack and he did well to make up for the slip-up.

"Let's give a special round of applause from Sea Island, Georgia, Stewart Cink," said Pavin as everyone burst into laughter.

"I apologise Mr Cink," added Pavin.

Montgomerie, who was flawless in his presentation that followed Pavin's, said that he had not been comfortable during the rehearsals for the opening ceremony with the set-up and believed that might have contributed to his opposite number's error.

"I think he (Pavin) was very, very good in covering his tracks in the manner that he had missed the British Open winner out. But at the same time, I think that was okay. It was a first-class show up there, and yes we are one-up."
