Delhi cops claim PCR calls have halved since implementation of CWG security measures

The glass is half empty, and that's good news for Delhi police. City cops say calls to the Police Control Rooms (PCRs) have gone down by half in the last few days. And they believe the stringent security measures adopted for the Commonwealth Games are to be credited.

"PCR calls have declined by 50 per cent. The reason behind this is the tightened security in Delhi for the Commonwealth Games," said a police officer.

Cops are busy at CWG but they are happy to hear the news. Paramilitary forces and security personnel deployed to secure the Games are adding to the sense of safety. Several cops have been suspended in the last few days for neglecting duty. This strict behaviour of the officers is making the policemen try to deliver their best. Constables have been complaining about long duty hours but the result is less crime.

Minor crimes like chain-snatching, auto-lifting and burglaries too are less frequent."It's a big relief for us. On any usual day we attend to numerous PCR calls, some of them fake, but these days very few calls are coming in," said a police officer associated with PCR.

On an average Delhi police receives 8000 PCR calls every day. And 50 to 60 per cent of such calls are bogus or insignificant.

Prize Catch

The Delhi police announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh for any information on the Jama Masjid attackers. The police have been investigating the case for long but haven't got any clues about the attackers so far. Now, the Commissioner of Police has announced this reward which will remain in force for one year. The incident occurred on September 19 when two unidentified men wearing raincoats attacked members of a Taiwan TV crew in front of Jama Masjid. The police suspects local involvement in the incident.
