Simona Halep acknowledges the crowd after her win yesterday
Top seed and French Open champion Simona Halep reached the Wimbledon third round yesterday with a 7-5, 6-0 win over China's Zheng Saisai. World No. 1 Halep will face Hsieh Su-Wei of Taiwan for a place in the Last 16. The Romanian raced away with the 10 last games to beat the 126-ranked Zheng. Angelique Kerber survived a battle against 2017 junior champion Claire Liu.

American Liu, 18, won the first set before the 2016 finalist came back to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. The final set could easily have gone either way, with five successive break of serves, but it was the German who prevailed. Johanna Konta's Wimbledon ended with a whimper in a straight-sets defeat by Dominika Cibulkova. The British No. 1 is now in danger of dropping out of the world's top 50 after a chastening 6-3 6-4 second-round loss.
