India are set to script a new chapter in its para sports history as 35 athletes will make their debut at the World Para Athletics Championships, scheduled to be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium from September 27 to October 5. This marks the largest-ever contingent of first-time Indian participants at the prestigious global event.
Among the standout debutants is Mahendra Gurjar, who grabbed global attention earlier this year by setting a world record in the men’s F42 javelin throw with a stunning effort of 61.17 metres at the Nottwil Grand Prix in Switzerland. Currently training at the national camp in Patiala, Gurjar is eyeing a strong finish on home soil in his maiden appearance at the World Championships.
“This championship isn't just about medals,” said Gurjar in an official release. “It's about showing the world the spirit and ability of Indian para athletes. I hopeour performances encourage more youngsters, especially girls, to chase their sporting dreams.”
The list of debutants reflects both depth and diversity, with representation across track and field events. Notable names include Atul Kaushik (discus F57), Praveen (shot put F46), Haney (discus F37), Mit Patel (long jump T44), Manjeet (javelin F13), Vishu (long jump T12), Pushpendra Singh (javelin F44), Ajay Singh (long jump T47), and Shubham Juyal (shot put F57).
The women’s contingent will also see several promising talents making their global debut, including Dayawanti (400m T20), Amisha Rawat (shot put F46), Anandhi Kulanthaisamy (club throw F32), and Suchitra Parida (javelin F56).
For Patel, the opportunity to perform in front of a home crowd is particularly special. “To compete at this level, in front of a home crowd, is something I've dreamed about since I first started training. I'm grateful for the opportunity and determined to make India proud,” said the long jumper.
The championships are being billed as India’s largest-ever para sporting event, with participation expected from over 2,200 athletes and officials representing more than 100 countries. Athletes will compete in 186 medal events, making the championship one of the most significant in the international para athletics calendar.
