Face massages always seemed mumbo jumbo to us. Now, we need to work out our face as well? But some things actually work. We started doing a Gua sha massage with Kumkumadi oil every night after cleansing. Gua sha is a traditional Chinese healing method in which you use a smooth-edged tool to stroke your skin while applying light pressure. The ridges and curves are designed to reach all contours of your face to circulate blood and drain the lymph nodes. As one massages in outward and downward strokes, it drains the bloat and prompts circulation. Combining it with Ayurvedic kumkumadi oil, made of kumkum and much more, will work on black spots and wrinkles. We now have glowing skin, and the black spots and sun damage have all but vanished.

Sri Lankan voices, all

This anthology is dedicated to the lives and words of over hundred Tamil, Sinhala, and English poets from the island nation. The book is enclosed in a captivating green jacket that immediately reminds one of lush flora and fauna. We thumb through the nearly 500-page book and are drawn to the voices springing out from every page: Sandra Fernando’s hymnal-inspired poems, S Pathmanathan’s incisive writing on modern-day deceptive attitudes, and contemporary poet Kasro Ponnuthurai’s Tamil works that feature unforgettable lovers and memories. The treasure-trove includes short introductions to each poet, chronicling their lives and placing in context the style and narrative themes of their works. Many of the voices are diasporic: The writers left the country during the civil war of 1983, giving up their identity not just figuratively but also by refusing to identify as Sri Lankan. The book seeks to present a definite text to encompass the writing of poets long gone, as well as ones who flourish amidst the ever-changing, fluctuating political and economic state of present-day Sri Lanka.

Love aaj curl

Men and haircare has always been tricky and this writer has spent an entire phase trying to slick back his curls with every product the TV recommended, before shearing them short.  Then we sought recommendations from female friends and turned the Curly Girl [CG] routine into the Curly Boy routine. We started with the basics: Paraben and sulphate-free shampoo; don’t forget to condition. We styled with hair wax first, which held the hair in place, but also left it dry and tangled. Then we discovered a curl-specific leave-in conditioner and hair cream. Both are applied when the hair is damp. Once fully dry, it settles down like a dream. And yes, the compliments have been pouring in.

Got your passport?

This one’s for geography enthusiasts. GeoGuessr lets you travel the world virtually but with a competitive twist. It is not an online map; it is a game where players must guess the city based on the panoramic view offered on screen. You need to use the landmarks visible on your screen to guess the place within five minutes. The only drawback we found was that the limited use is very short and you need to pay to play multiple games. However, unlimited play is at a mere R59 per month, billed yearly, and you get to compete in leaderboards and become part of a global community.

A murmur to keep you busy

Busy work days call for ways to shut out distractions. Some tune into lo-fi hip-hop tunes, while others prefer heavy metal. If you want a gentler soundscape, try A Soft Murmur—a white noise generator by Gabriel Brady. It allows users to combine white noise with numerous sounds like that of Tibetan singing bowls. We recommend working against the ambience of a forest campsite, complete with the crackling of a fire and the chirping of crickets.
