The fisherfolk at Manori have put out a call for a shutdown of the coastal village tomorrow to register their objection to the desalination plant proposed there. The fishing community fears the plant will make the seawater too salty for any fish to survive. But what does the science say?

If you are a true-blue Mumbaikar you have spent at least one evening at Manori Beach. Manori village is a pocket of Mumbai that almost seems to be locked in another time; it’s the closest thing we have to Goa in our city. It’s hard to imagine this quaint village, with its Portuguese-style homes and quiet strolls by the beach, is now the epicentre of a massive face-off between the locals and the authorities.
Tomorrow, the fishing community is set to shut down the coastal hamlet with a bandh and protest march against the project. Here, salt and sea are sacrosanct for the fisherfolk who live off the catch. And they fear that’s exactly what’s at stake with the new desalination plant proposed to come up here by 2029.
