I am a 31-year old woman and have been in a relationship for around three years. My boyfriend and I love each other, and I know he cares about me, but I also believe he lacks empathy for others. He doesn’t care about anyone else who isn’t part of his personal life, is never interested in what other people are going through and comes across as very self-centred even though I know he is a nice person to family and friends. Are these double standards a cause for concern, and should I worry about what this means for our future together?
If you are worried about who he is, and aren’t sure about this, take as much time to think about it as you need. All our actions matter, not just in the way we treat people close to us, but in the way we treat everyone else. If you believe he doesn’t empathise, and this bothers you, it is a sign that you aren’t as comfortable with the person he is as you would like to be. This may have no impact on your love for him but may have everything to do with whether you respect him as a person. If that is affected, your relationship with him will be unbalanced and may lead to issues neither of you may foresee at this point. Tell him how you feel and give him a chance to explain why he behaves the way he does. And if that doesn’t satisfy you, I suggest you walk into your future with him with your eyes wide open.

My boyfriend treats me like a princess, but also has a roving eye and is constantly checking out other women. Should I leave him for this or learn to be more accepting?
That depends entirely upon how disrespectful you believe this is. If he genuinely cares about you, he shouldn’t be doing anything that offends you, because you presumably give him that respect. You shouldn’t have to accept anything you don’t want to.
