How do I tell my boyfriend that I need time to myself? He and I have been dating for seven months, and, in all that time, I have not had a single weekend to myself. It’s great to spend time with him and I appreciate the fact that he loves being with me, but it is sometimes too much to handle. He is always doing sweet things for me, which only makes me guilty when I think about how I would rather read a book on some days or just watch television alone. I know this makes me seem like an awful person, but I can’t help feeling this way and I worry that if it continues, I will start to dislike him. I don’t want that to happen because it’s not his fault. How can I fix this?
Your right to personal time is valid and important, so start by abandoning the guilt associated with this. Your boyfriend needs to know that time off is not a reflection of your feelings for him because he is an adult and should be capable of understanding and accepting this need. He may want to spend as much time with you as possible, but his needs have to take your own into account too, if this relationship must evolve. Try explaining why time away from each other is important, how it can strengthen rather than weaken your bond, and why respecting your right to time and space is critical for your future together.

My partner is being very evasive about a friend, which makes me worry that he is doing something wrong. I don’t trust his friend because he is not very open about his work, which is why I think my boyfriend should stay away from him. Am I being too controlling?
You are expressing concern, and your partner should have an explanation to set your mind at ease. He has the right to be friends with whomever he chooses, but your opinion shouldn’t be dismissed without an explanation.
