I just found out a few days ago that my girlfriend has a profile on a dating app. When I asked her about it, she said it was old and that she hadn’t deleted it. She then turned it around and asked me why I was snooping on her phone, which was not the point at all. I don’t know if she is lying or just trying to distract me from this, but I am not sure this is a good reason. If you’re in a relationship with someone, you shouldn’t need to be on a dating app, and you can’t just forget to delete it because I’m sure you get notifications from time to time. I am avoiding her since that conversation because I don’t want to say anything while I’m angry, but I’m also confused because I don’t want to come across as a jealous boyfriend when I have no real reason to doubt her. What should I do?
It’s always smart to take time to process something that is bothering you, and to not react in the heat of the moment. It’s also important to recognise that trust is the most important aspect of any strong and healthy relationship. If you trust your girlfriend, doubting her undermines that. If you believe her, and have no reason to assume she would lie, not accepting what she has to say can be corrosive. If this bothers you, and you need an explanation that makes sense, ask for one and give her an idea of why this upsets you. It may be a minor issue for her, and you may have to evaluate where this anger is coming from. It’s not an unreasonable reaction because there is no reason for her to have that app, but it’s also perfectly acceptable for someone to forget to uninstall it too. Either way, take some time to think about this, evaluate her actions, consider the issue of honesty and trust, and choose to go with facts not with an imagined slight.
