The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd (MRVC) is making progress on the development and augmentation of EMU maintenance facilities under MUTP-IIIA, aimed at strengthening the maintenance infrastructure needed for the future expansion of Mumbai's suburban railway network, an official statement said.
The programme includes the development of new EMU car sheds at Bhivpuri and Vangaon, along with the augmentation of existing maintenance facilities to support the growing suburban rolling stock fleet.
The proposed Bhivpuri EMU Carshed is progressing after the acquisition of the entire 45.24 hectares of land required for the project. This includes 42.28 hectares of private land and 2.96 hectares of government land.
Work on the site gained momentum after MRVC awarded a contract in August 2025 for land development, bridge extensions, boundary wall construction, drainage and road works.
Around 7.16 lakh cubic metres of earthwork has already been completed at the Bhivpuri site. Drone and Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) surveys have also been completed, along with geotechnical investigations.
Construction of retaining walls is currently in progress at Bhivpuri. Meanwhile, approvals relating to the General Arrangement Drawings (GADs) for bridges and the Carshed Engineering Scale Plan (ESP) are under process.
The planned facility is expected to strengthen EMU maintenance capacity and provide additional infrastructure to meet the requirements of Mumbai's expanding suburban rail network.
MRVC is also progressing with the proposed Vangaon EMU Carshed, which will require around 43.68 hectares of land.
The acquisition process for the entire 3.64 hectares of private land has advanced, with the compensation amount deposited for disbursement to the affected landowners. The remaining land required for the project is forest land.
The Vangaon project received Stage-I âIn-Principle' forest clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) in February 2026.
The process for obtaining Stage-II forest clearance is currently underway with MoEF&CC. The progress on the clearance process is an important step towards taking the Vangaon carshed project forward.
The development of the Bhivpuri and Vangaon EMU car sheds is part of MRVC's wider programme to create additional maintenance infrastructure for Mumbai's suburban railway system.
Along with the augmentation of existing maintenance facilities, the new car sheds are intended to support the progressive expansion and modernisation of Mumbai's suburban rolling stock fleet.
The projects are expected to play an important role in ensuring that maintenance infrastructure keeps pace with the future requirements of the city's suburban railway network under MUTP-IIIA.
