Heavy rainfall triggered a major landslide at the Moshi garbage depot in Pune district in Maharashtra on Tuesday, causing a large mound of waste to collapse onto the administrative building of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) Waste-to-Energy project, officials said.

Emergency teams rushed to the site soon after the incident, and rescue operations are continuing.

Officials fear that eight to ten employees may be trapped beneath the collapsed waste and debris.

However, authorities have not yet confirmed the exact number of people trapped, and search operations are still in progress.

The number of people affected will only be confirmed after rescue teams complete their search of the site.

Fire brigade and disaster teams launch rescue operation

Teams from the Fire Brigade and the Disaster Management Department are carrying out rescue and evacuation efforts.

The operation includes clearing debris, searching for trapped workers and ensuring the area is safe for rescue personnel.

Authorities said the rescue effort is being carried out with caution due to the unstable conditions at the site.

Injured shifted to hospital

Several injured employees have been rescued and shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Officials have not yet released details about the condition of the injured or confirmed the number of casualties.

Further information is expected once rescue operations are completed.

Heavy rainfall raises safety concerns

The incident comes after continuous heavy rainfall across the Pune region over the past few days.

The rain has raised concerns about the stability of waste mounds, slopes and other vulnerable structures in and around the city.

The officials are monitoring the situation closely while rescue operations continue at the Moshi garbage depot.

Officials are expected to investigate the cause of the landslide after the rescue operation is completed.
