The Indian Navy's sail training ship INS Sudarshini arrived at the Port of Mindelo on Sao Vicente Island in Cape Verde on May 4, 2026, marking a key milestone in its ongoing transoceanic deployment, an official statement said on Wednesday.

The visit to Mindelo is the eighth port call since the ship was flagged off under the Lokayan-26 initiative on January 20 2026.

It also represents the vessel's final stop in Africa before it begins its trans-Atlantic journey towards the Caribbean.

Strengthening maritime cooperation

During the visit, the Commanding Officer of INS Sudarshini is set to hold engagements with local maritime authorities.

The programme includes professional exchanges, social interactions with the Cape Verde Coast Guard and more.

"The programme also includes cross-training exchanges, alongwith professional and social interactions with the Cape Verde Coast Guard, aimed at fostering mutual cooperation and understanding. The ship will also be open to visitors during the stopover, offering an opportunity for the local community to experience the vessel and engage with the crew," said an official statement issued by the Defence PRO.

These interactions aim to enhance cooperation, build mutual understanding and strengthen ties between the two maritime forces.

Open for public visits

The ship will also be open to visitors during its stay, allowing the local community to explore the vessel and interact with its crew. The initiative is expected to promote cultural exchange and awareness about India's naval traditions.

Voyage showcases India's maritime reach

The Lokayan-26 voyage has already covered more than 8,000 nautical miles, achieving several milestones for the Indian Navy. Officials say the mission highlights India's growing presence in global maritime affairs.

INS Sudarshini's deployment is being seen as a symbol of maritime diplomacy, showcasing India's naval capability, professionalism and goodwill on the international stage.

"The ongoing transoceanic voyage of Lokayan-26 has already covered over 8,000 nautical miles and achieved several historic milestones for the Indian Navy, reaffirming India's expanding maritime outreach. The deployment stands as a strong symbol of maritime diplomacy, with INS Sudarshini serving as a beacon of India's maritime strength, professionalism, and goodwill on the global stage," the statement said.
