<p>Banks in Mumbai and Maharashtra will remain open on Saturday, September 5, despite it being <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/lifestyle/culture/article/from-culture-to-sport-how-dahi-handi-is-transforming-insights-from-mumbais-govindas-23376103" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Dahi Handi.</a> Additionally, September 5 is also Teacher's Day, to celebrate the birth anniversary of Sarvepalli Radhakrishan, the second President of India.</p>
<p>Both Dahi Handi and Teacher's Day are not part of the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) holiday calendar for September. So it is a regular working day for banks across the country.</p>
<p>As per the RBI website, all public and private sector banks will remain open today as it is the first Saturday of the month. At present banks are closed for operations on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<h2>States where the banks were closed on September 4</h2>
<p>However, <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/business/business-news/article/janmashtami-2026-is-it-a-bank-holiday-in-mumbai-today-september-4-23648289" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">banks across several states were closed on Friday, September 4 in observance of Janmashtami</a>. This did not include Maharashtra and banks were open across the state, including Mumbai.</p>
<p>According to the RBI website, banks were closed on account of Janmashtami (Vaishnva) (Shravan Vad-8)/Krishna Jayanthi. The states included Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu Kashmir, Jharkhand, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Online and digital banking remain open</h2>
<p>However, during bank holiday on physical branches are closed while essential banking services remain open. When the physical branches are closed for operations, customers can use online banking systems for transaction purposes. Customers can also use Unified Interface Payments (UPI) or transact through their bank apps. For cash withdrawals, Automated Teller Machines (ATMS) can be used as these remain fully functional during bank holidays.</p>

<p>Dahi Handi, held a day after Janmashtami, sees Govinda teams form human pyramids to reach and break earthen pots filled with curd, butter or other offerings, recreating an episode associated with the childhood of Lord Krishna.</p>

<p>India celebrates <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/web-stories/teachers-day-2026-5-unique-facts-to-know-8335" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Teacher&rsquo;s Day</a> on 5th September to mark the birthday of the country's most celebrated teacher and academic philosopher Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishan.</p>
<p>Born on September, 5, 1888, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was one of the most distinguished 20th-century scholars of comparative religion and philosophy. He served as the first Vice President of India between 1952 and 1962 and the second President of India from 1962 to 1967.&nbsp;</p>
