After a historic global festival run, the glorious 'Songs of Forgotten Trees' is coming home. Debutant filmmaker Anuparna Roy’s acclaimed drama—presented by Anurag Kashyap—is gearing up for its grand premiere in India at the upcoming Dharamshala International Film Festival (DIFF).

Songs of Forgotten Trees to close DIFF 2025

With the movie, Roy had scripted history in September by winning the Orizzonti Award for Best Director at the prestigious 82nd Venice Film Festival, where 'Songs of Forgotten Trees' was the only Indian film that got selected in the esteemed Orizzonti section.

The much-awaited film, produced by Bibhanshu Rai, Romil Modi and Ranjan Singh will now be the closing film at DIFF, which is set to take place from October 30 to November 2.

Sharing her thoughts on how the home audience will finally get to witness the film at the hillside festival, Roy said, “Our film has been seen by the global audience in the last couple of months, but gives me immense joy, about bringing it home. To have its India premiere at the Dharamshala International Film Festival— a festival that celebrates cinema with heart, thought, and soul - feels deeply personal. Dharamshala’s mountains, its silences, its spirit… they echo so much of what this film stands for. I couldn’t have imagined a more fitting homecoming to close our journey.”

Film made history in Venice

Ranjan Singh of Flip Films said making ‘Songs of Forgotten Trees’ has been a truly collaborative journey — one that began as a “quiet, intimate story and went on to find a universal resonance.” After its smashing Venice debut, ‘Songs of Forgotten Trees’ travelled to BFI London Film Festival and Cork International Film Festival.

“Watching it make history at Venice and connect with audiences across continents has been incredibly rewarding. To now bring it home for its India premiere at the Dharamshala International Film Festival feels like the perfect culmination. Dharamshala, with its independent spirit and love for meaningful cinema, is the ideal space for this homecoming,” Singh added.

Starring Naaz Shaikh and Sumi Baghel, and co-produced by Navin Shetty and Roy, 'Songs of Forgotten Trees' follows the story of two women and how their lives get intertwined in Mumbai.
