Lost in the storm
A piece of cinematic history has taken a hit. A portion of legendary actor Raj Kapoor’s ancestral haveli in Peshawar collapsed after heavy rains and a strong earthquake on Friday night. The century-old Kapoor haveli, declared a national heritage site in 2016, suffered structural damage after rains weakened the building, with tremors further destabilising its fragile structure.

Shakeel Waheedullah, secretary of the heritage council in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, confirmed that a section of the wall caved in, raising concerns about the safety of what remains. The house, built by Prithviraj Kapoor’s father, Dewan Basheswarnath Kapoor, between 1918 and 1922, is also where Raj Kapoor and his uncle Trilok Kapoor were born. The Kapoor haveli, located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, was declared a national heritage site by the Pakistan government in 2016.
