A still from Queen Mantis
Inspired by the French television series, La Mante, Netflix’s latest Korean drama Queen Mantis starring Go Hyun-jung and Jang Dong-yoon has concluded its first season with 8 explosive episodes. It has all the elements to be on your binge list if you like thrillers with a dark premise. It is snacky and gives a shot of adrenaline as each episode progresses. However, please note that it is gory, contains mature themes, and is certainly not for the faint of heart.

What is Queen Mantis about
Queen Mantis is a mystery-thriller-police procedural that features Go Hyun-jung as Jung Yi-shin, a serial killer imprisoned for committing a series of murders, where her victims were those who inflicted crimes against women and children. She gets the titular name after the insect that sometimes eats the head of its male partner during or after mating. Her son Cha Soo-yeol, played by Jang Dong-yoon, grows up to be a detective who despises her. Their paths cross after a new serial killer emerges after decades, who is now imitating Jung Yi-shin. The series delves into Cha Soo-yeol's attempt to hunt the perpetrator, with his mother’s help in understanding the killer’s next move.

Is Queen Mantis worth a watch
Queen Mantis undoubtedly wins the argument for several reasons besides its theme and nature. The production of this series is top-notch, and despite a ton of flashbacks and flashforwards, it doesn’t let you lose pace. The acting of the two lead stars is incredible right up until the final scene.
It is not your ordinary Criminal Minds-like spin-off, but rather delves into the psyche of a maniac on the loose with a shocking origin story for Jung Yi-shin and her copycat. While it might seem to be an ideal world, it doesn’t take the creative liberty too far. You might find nuances of Mindhunter, which was abruptly shelved after two seasons.
Queen Mantis has layers of storytelling besides being a police procedural. It also sheds light on the children who have borne the brunt of their parents’ crimes. Go Hyun-jung and Jang Dong-yoon's dynamics as mother and son add the emotional side to this gut-wrenching miniseries that angers yet empowers you.
