The defamation lawsuit filed by BTS members V and Jungkook against YouTuber Sojang has advanced. The K-media outlet Star Today said on July 21 that the two sides went to court in an attempt to negotiate a settlement, but they ran into trouble. It suggests that the trials will go on and that the case, which started in February 2024, is far from over.
On July 21 at 9:40 am KST (6:10 am IST), V and Jungkook's sides took part in a court-mediated hearing at the Seoul Western District Court. In its defamation case against Sojang, the owner of the YouTube channel Taldeok Camp, it sought to investigate a possible settlement. This comes after the June 16 decision by the second-level court to switch the case from a full hearing to this format.
All about the case
The goal of the conversation was to enable the defendant and the prosecution to communicate and, with the help of the court, come to a mutually advantageous conclusion. However, the two parties failed to reach a consensus in spite of their best efforts. The court ruled that "mediation failed" as a result, and the current trial process will now resume.
The court found YouTuber Sojang guilty in February 2025 of disseminating inaccurate information about the BTS duo. In order to do this, she uploaded 23 videos to her channel between October 2021 and June 2023, a span of 1 year and 8 months. The Seoul Western District Court's 12th Civil Division later mandated that she pay 76 million KRW (about 53,000 USD) in damages.
What had happened?
In January 2025, V and Jungkook first sued, requesting 90 million KRW in damages for content infringement and defamation. The damages sum was changed to 76 million KRW even though the court decided in their favour. It was carried out with the knowledge that she was sincerely sorry for what she had done and that it was her first offence.
In addition to the lawsuit against the BTS members, Sojang lost a few other defamation lawsuits, such as those involving former Wanna One member Kang Daniel and Jang Wonyoung of IVE.
