Actor Soubin Shahir is grabbing eyeballs with his energetic dance moves in the song Moncia from the film Coolie, starring Rajinikanth in the lead. His performance in the song has been widely praised, and he even performed it live at the film’s pre-release event held earlier this month in Chennai. At the event, Rajinikanth also spoke about Shahir and admitted he was initially doubtful about his casting.
Rajinikanth doubted Soubin's casting
Rajinikanth publicly revealed that he had reservations about Soubin’s casting as Dayal in the film because he was bald. The superstar was not aware of Soubin’s body of work in Malayalam cinema prior to Coolie.
“I asked Lokesh, ‘Who is Soubin? Which films has he acted in?’ He mentioned Manjummel Boys, where Soubin played a key role,” Rajinikanth said.
“I still had doubts and even questioned whether he would suit the role because he was bald. But I eventually stayed quiet because Lokesh had full confidence in him,” he added.
However, Rajinikanth later took back his words, admitting he was completely blown away by Soubin’s talent. “Lokesh told me I only needed to join the shoot on the third day. He was busy filming Soubin’s portions on the first two. When I finally arrived, he showed me Soubin’s scenes, and I was blown away. What an actor! Hats off!”
Before Soubin, Lokesh had Fahadh Faasil in mind to play the role of Dayal. However, the Malayalam star was busy with other projects at the time.
Who is Soubin Shahir?
Soubin is one of the most talented actors in Malayalam cinema, who made his acting debut in 2013 with Annayum Rasoolum. He had his breakthrough in 2015 with the cult classic Premam, where he played a PT teacher. He showcased his versatility in Sudani From Nigeria by playing the lead role, a performance that won him the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor.
He also delivered a powerful performance in the critically acclaimed Kumbalangi Nights. His emotional breakdown scene in front of a doctor, as his character battles depression, remains unforgettable.
Soubin most recently made an impact with his role in Manjummel Boys(2024). Based on a true story, the film saw Soubin rise to the occasion when his friend falls into a deep pit in the Guna caves.
Apart from these, Soubin has appeared in several other Malayalam films, including Charlie (2015), Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016), Darvinte Parinamam (2016), Kammatipaadam (2016), Anuraga Karikkin Vellam (2016), and Mayanadhi (2017).
