Having just returned from their tour to Bangalore and Hyderabad, santoor exponent Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia will be playing in an Indian Classical duet this weekend, as part of the Splendour of Masters series of concerts.

Sharma and Chaurasia go a long way. In fact, the two had recorded an album back in 1967, and also worked on two jugalbandi albums in the 70s and 90s. They also jointly produced music for several Bollywood films including Silisila and Lamhe. &ldquo;Our compatibility has always kept us close. This duet concert is one of those occasional live events, which we like to do once every few years to keep our music and compatibility alive. I must add that I very much enjoy playing with Hariji,&rdquo; says Sharma.

Sharma and Chaurasia are back together for this concert after six years, and fans can expect the duo playing not only old music but several new works as well, and improvise on them together on the stage this weekend.
Sharma explains how for a successful duet, participating musicians complement each other and do not compete against each other. This is what makes his duets with Chaurasia special. &ldquo;To play a duet, two musicians need a lot&nbsp; of understanding, experience and must complement each other, not compete. The reason why Hariji (Chaurasia) and I play is because we share great understanding towards each other while playing music and complement each other perfectly. Our synergies match well when we play together. We will play some new as well as old classical music but it will be improvised on the day,&rdquo; he shares.
These renditions will be what music fans from the old as well as current generation will love. A genre, according to Sharma that is drawing more interest, is Classical music. &ldquo;As compared to previous years, these days, many young people attend our Classical music concerts,&rdquo; he informs.
Joining the two maestros for the concert, now in its sixth edition, will be Ghatam wizard Vikku Vinayakram, renowned Pakhawaj maestro Bhawani Shankar and Subhankar Banerjee on tabla.
