Ammi&rsquo;s Biryani Food: Good Service: Quick Ambiance: Cosy
Located en route to Borivali station, Ammi&rsquo;s Biryani is the latest entrant in the locality, and promises traditional Hyderabadi food at reasonable prices. Being a meat lover, this sounded exciting, especially since there aren&rsquo;t many options in this area. We were also keen to taste their fare when we learnt that the chain has 60 outlets across Bengaluru and Chennai (combined), and had entered Mumbai with six outlets.

We called for a takeaway. The customer care executive was helpful, a bit comical, too, as she read out the ingredients in one go, and was keen to plug a few dishes. So, after a five-minute tutorial about the menu, we ordered for Chicken Kabab (Rs 99), Soya Veg Kheema Pav (Rs 89) and Ammi&rsquo;s Special Roll (Rs 139) as starters, three Biryanis &mdash; Pindi Chole Biryani (Rs 150), Mutton Hyderabadi Biryani (Rs 275) and Executive Chicken Combo (Rs 179), and Paratha with Shahi Angara Chicken Kofta (Rs 149) as mains, and Matka Phirni (Rs 50) for dessert.

We collected our parcel from the eatery &mdash; a space with limited seating (not more than 10 people can sit). We thought our order would run a high bill, but it was under Rs 1,000 (with a 10% discount). We did our daily commute with this takeaway for nearly 90 minutes, and were surprised that the food was warm when we reached our workplace.

Unlike typical plastic containers for takeaways, our fare was served in cardboard boxes, with a handy pack that included a paper napkin, spoon and a toothpick! Few places get their Soya Keema right, and Ammi&rsquo;s Biryani was spot on. Though, the portions weren&rsquo;t generous, it brought back memories of Marine Restaurant at Marine Lines, popular for its Soya Keema. Ammi&rsquo;s Special Paratha Roll was a hit, too, and was wolfed down in minutes; likewise with the Chicken Kabab; the flavouring of the meat was similar in both dishes.
The three biryanis, cooked in traditional dum style, were served with tiny bowls of curd, onions and a sweet dish. The Hyderabadi Mutton Biryani was a delicious ride and the aromas of mutton and spices winning us over. The pieces were juicy, but what impressed us were the hidden meatballs, which heightened our experience.
The real star of the meal was the Chicken Executive Biryani with its perfect mix of spices and taste. Since it was part of a combo, it came with a pack of Chicken Kalimirch Tawa Kabab. The Pindi Chole Biryani was the lone downer as it lacked any standout flavour. The Shahi Angara Chicken Kofta served with Paratha was another surprise hit. Though the meat in the koftas was a tad tough, the gravy was a winner. The Malabari Parathas were soft and flaky, as expected.
After the spread, the Matka Phirni, with a hint of rose, and the right sweetness, made for an ideal way to end a satisfying lunch. We are fans, Ammi.
