No matter how plain it appears, every relationship is complicated. The layers of emotions are often tightly woven by threads of sentiments. That's what the play Saari Raat is all about. Written by Badal Sarkar, it's the story of a husband, a wife and an old man.
"It begins with a couple who has lost their way in a jungle and find a place to take respite, only to find out that what they thought of as an abandoned godown is, in fact, the house of an old man. As the conversation between the three deepens, the complicacies in the couple's relationship are revealed. The void in the life of the woman and the old man connects and the social institution of marriage is demolished in front of the husband," says director Indrodeepto Roy, who believes that the challenges that every couple faces are the same. It could be the reason the story is still relevant.

For the director and the crew, the most challenging aspect of the play was understanding the depth of the psyche of each character. "There are many shades to all the characters in it, so to portray that in a poetic manner was not easy," says Roy. The team believes that staging the play at the venue, will give them a perfect platform to showcase an intimate story like Saari Raat. "It's a simple play layered with so many meanings," says Roy.
