POWAI seems to be basking in a slew of new launches, with spaces that have opened up over the last six months. Joining this bunch, right on the brink of the New Year, is Ruha Kitchen and Bar, by Prabhakar and Ritesh Shetty, who also own Hotel Capitol in Thane.

Spanning 3,500 sq ft, the restaurant hopes to be an all-day dining space, and will convert into a lounge come nightfall. It will serve an array of cuisines, including continental and Asian favourites, as well as a vast selection of house cocktails. However, its focus lies in Awadhi cuisine, with shorbas, kebabs, and biryanis finding a place on the menu.
The space has been designed by Nishant Desai, who is also the man behind the interiors of Opa and Kaitlyn's Beer Garden in the city. "We've gone for a medieval haveli feel, but with modern touches. Many of the elements &mdash; windows, doors, grilles &mdash; have been sourced from dilapidated houses in South India and Madhya Pradesh, and refurbished to give the space that old-world vibe," says Desai.

We perused the extensive Awadhi menu, and some dishes stood out. The first is the Kakori Kabab (Rs 375), which is described as a melt-in-the-mouth secret recipe that has been handed down through generations to Chef Qureshi, who helms the kitchen. The Awadhi Jhinga (Rs 525), meanwhile, features jumbo-sized prawns flavoured with fragrant saffron and cooked in the tandoor.
Among the mains, the Purane Choke ki Nahari (Rs 445) &mdash; slow-braised lamb with paya stock &mdash;caught our attention, as did the Paneer Bukhara Korma &mdash; cottage cheese in a pumpkin-and-tomato gravy with putli masala. These can be mopped up with a Warqi Paratha (R95) or Taftaan (Rs 95).

On the day after Christmas, Powai will welcome its newest dining space that promises to offer a flavour-filled ode to authentic Awadhi cuisine
