Ah, pancakes. Those glorious, pillowy stacks drizzled with butter and maple syrup, which make breakfast a meal worth fussing over. But, then again, who said pancakes can only be had in the morning? Out to break every notion you have about this unassuming breakfast staple is Mini Pancakes And More (MPAM), a new eatery off Carter Road.
Happy space It takes us a bit of walking up and down the street before we finally spot the joint, tucked away between two other popular, and therefore, crowded eateries. However, this also means it's nicely shielded from downpour, making it the perfect spot to run to for food and protection from the rain.
The eatery itself is tiny, and can hold no more than four people at a time. Although the d&eacute;cor is sparse, hints of pleasing pastels smile at you, in the menu or from colourful buntings strung up on the ceiling.

Breaking the first rule of thumb when it comes to pancakes, the eatery chooses to not open in the morning. Instead, it turns the comfort dish into a dessert you can tuck into post a late-night binge at one of the many eateries lining the narrow street. The other thing MPAM does differently is ditching the stacks and opting for something a lot more versatile: coin-sized pancakes.
The menu features pancakes with fairly conventional toppings, like Dark Belgian Chocolate, Nutella with Banana, and even the classic Maple Syrup and Butter.
We try the Some Berry Fun (R130), which features eight mini pancakes topped with cream cheese and strawberry sauce, but are left a little disappointed. Although the pancakes are golden brown on the outside and fluffy on the inside, the massive dollops of rich cream cheese on them make it a challenge for us to eat more than a couple. Think of it as eating a slice of red velvet cake with more cream cheese than cake. The experience is made worse by the synthetic-tasting strawberry sauce.
However, redemption comes in the form of the Twister (R180), starring pancakes drizzled with chocolate sauce, cookie crumble, and salted caramel sauce, then topped with chunks of Twix and vanilla ice cream. Chocolate fiends, don't hesitate &mdash; this will take care of cravings for a long time to come.

Shake it MPAM also serves milkshakes and coolers. We get the Unicorn and the Caramel King (both R160).
The former is a bubblegum-flavoured drink topped with cotton candy, which sinks promptly to the bottom. We love the fact that despite what the name suggests, the shake is not overly saccharine. The popcorn-topped Caramel King, meanwhile, is meant for those with a serious sweet tooth.
We believe MPAM has potential beyond just the novelty value of its offerings. It is a welcome addition to the Carter Road stretch, and we hope it will stick around longer than most places here tend to.
