Ah, rum -- the good old drink that built friendships and made all the worries of your youth melt away (although only momentarily). But, did you know that there is more to this alcoholic beverage than just the regular Rum and Coke?
Learn the intricacies of the spirit from Keshav Prakash, curator and founder of The Vault, a boutique for handcrafted fine spirits from across the world.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a very chatty and informal session. We will be discussing Rum or Rhum Agricole (rum made from the juice of sugarcane) and Rum Industriel (rum made from molasses),&rdquo; says Prakash. He adds that he will also be sharing information on the different styles of rum, such as white, dark, and even gold and spiced.
You can also expect to hear fascinating tales about his trips to far-off lands such as Haiti and Guyana in search of rum.
Prakash reveals that at the event, attendees will also have the chance to taste a piece of rum history. &ldquo;I will be offering a very rare rum, which comes from Trinidad and Tobago&rsquo;s Caroni distillery. This distillery had been operational since 1923, but was forced to shut down in 2003. In its time, it was renowned throughout the world for producing one of the finest heavy rums,&rdquo; he says.
Discussing the rum industry in India, Prakash bemoans the fact that despite being home to plenty of sugarcane fields, India does not make good rum. &ldquo;According to one school of thought, India had a very important role in the development of rum, as sugarcane is believed to have travelled West from here. However, today, most of the molasses in our country go into the making of other spirits,&rdquo; he shares.
Unlike wine and whiskey, whose appreciation involves elaborate tasting rituals, rum is a hassle-free drink. Prakash says, &ldquo;It is the drink of the common man in the Caribbean. But to them, it&rsquo;s as serious as a single malt.&rdquo;
