Police have arrested a man from Bihar and seized more than 3 kg of charas worth Rs 31 lakh from him in Thane city, an official said on Tuesday.

The narcotic was seized on Monday (June 30) in the Kopri area after the Crime Branch laid a trap, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Amarsingh Jadhav told reporters.

The action was initiated after senior police inspector Salil Bhosale of the Crime Branch's Wagle Unit received a tip-off about a suspected narcotics deal, he said.
"The accused was expected to arrive in front of a hotel to sell charas to his customers. Our team laid a trap and apprehended the suspect at the location," said the DCP.

The arrested individual has been identified as Mohammad Aftab Alam Mohammad Salim Akhtar, 34, a resident of Chhapra in Bihar. Jadhav said 3.096 kilograms of charas, with an estimated market value of Rs 30,96,000, was seized from his possession.

Along with the drug, the police also recovered cash, a mobile phone, and other valuables worth an additional Rs 11,500, bringing the total seizure to Rs. 31,07,500, according to the DCP.

An offence has been registered against the accused at the Kopri police station under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
