It has been reported that after the Air India plane from Kochi overshot the runway at the Mumbai airport, it has now been grounded for checks.
The tragic incident was reported a few hours after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Mumbai. The IMD on Monday morning issued a nowcast warning of heavy to very heavy rain, prompting delays and heightened precautions across the city’s air traffic operations.
The Air India plane, which departed from Kochi earlier in the day, landed safely in Mumbai but veered slightly off the runway during touchdown due to reduced visibility and slippery conditions caused by persistent rain.
Despite the brief excursion, the pilots managed to regain control, and the aircraft was able to taxi to the designated gate without further complications.
An airline spokesperson, while addressing the incident, said that “the aircraft taxied safely, and all passengers as well as crew members have disembarked.”
The spokesperson for Air India highlighted that "Flight AI2744, operating from Kochi to Mumbai on July 21, 2025, experienced heavy rain during landing, resulting in a runway excursion after touchdown. The aircraft taxied safely to the gate, and all passengers and crew members have since disembarked," as cited by news agency PTI.
In a statement from the airport, a CSMIA spokesperson stated that, "In order to ensure continuity of operations, the secondary runway 14/32 – has been activated. The incident has reported no injuries to any passengers or crew, who were all attended by CSMIA’s emergency response teams, after the flight landed safely at 09:27 AM."
Moreover, sources have also revealed that a team from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is assessing the situation. With the monsoon predicted to be getting heavier in the coming few days across Mumbai, the CSMIA authorities seek to arrange all the safety precautions to make sure that incidents like these do not happen often.
