Motorists using the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will have to drive with extreme caution while passing through the Khandala tunnel, as the authorities will be initiating maintenance work on a 300-metre stretch from today to March 11. During this period, one of the three lanes will remain inaccessible for the motorists.

Speaking to mid-day, an Expressway control staffer said, &ldquo;The maintenance work will be taking place at the Khandala tunnel &mdash; on a 300-metre stretch &mdash; where there are potentially loose boulders and scree. The repair work will commence from Monday and go on till March 11. To ensure that motorists aren&rsquo;t inconvenienced, only one of the three lanes will remain shut during this time. In case of jams, traffic will be diverted to the old Mumbai-Pune highway. We suggest motorists drive slowly while passing through the tunnel. The work site will have adequate lighting and manpower, generator back up, an ambulance and a fire tender to tackle an untoward incident if any. Signboards will also be installed to caution the motorists.&rdquo;
