The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday cracked down on alleged illegal constructions at Kamla Mills in Lower Parel in Mumbai and carried out demolitions at two places, civic officials said.
They said that the officials have also inspected seven other outlets in the commercial complex located in central Mumbai.
According to the civic body, a joint inspection and demolition drive was carried out at Kamla Mills by the G/South Ward Fire Compliance Cell of the BMC on Thursday.
The action was taken with the aim of improving fire safety, building regulation compliance, and public safety in the busy commercial area, it said.
The drive involved officers from several departments, including the Fire Brigade, Building and Factory Department, Medical Officer of Health (MOH) Department, Encroachment Removal, and Maintenance, the BMC said.
It said that the drive was conducted under the guidance of Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Ashwini Joshi, Prashant Sapkale, the Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Zone 2 and Assistant Commissioner G/South Ward Swapnaja Kshirsagar.
The civic body also shared the details of the seven establishments those where it conducted the inspections on Thursday.
The BMC said that the outlets including Theobroma Restaurant, McDonald’s, Shivsagar Hotel, Nano’s Cafe, Starbucks, Bira Taproom and Food by Devika were inspected.
"As part of the enforcement, the Health Department took seizure action against M/s Taproom and M/s Tos Pasta Bar (operating as Food by Devika) for violating license conditions. These included unauthorised use of open spaces in front of their premises. The Building and Factory Department carried out demolition actions at an unauthorised M.S. compound wall built in front of BKT House (C building) for parking was demolished. It was blocking the layout road exit. Sheds and fences illegally built in the open areas of Bira Taproom and Food by Devika were also removed," the BMC said in an official statement.
