Officers from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) grilled Indrani Mukerjea for nearly eight hours at the Byculla women's prison yesterday in connection with the INX Media Private Limited money-laundering case. The ED is likely to quiz her again in the first week of December.

According to sources, the ED suspects that Indrani along with her husband Peter Mukerjea and stepson Rabin Mukerjea laundered the money. The Mukerjeas had formed the company in 2006, after which they approached the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) to get investment through FDI from three non-resident investors. However, even after getting 26 per cent investment, they again sought permission for more investment.
The ED suspects that they deliberately concealed the fact that they had already got investment for the company, as a result of which the finance minister approved the second request as well. Sources in the ED said that as Indrani was a key person in all of this, she is being questioned about her involvement.

Earlier, ED probe in the matter had revealed that FIPB, in its letter on May 31, 2007, had permitted INX Media to receive FDI worth Rs 46.2 million. However, the company eventually got investment worth Rs 3,053.6 million during the period August 22, 2007, and May 12, 2008. The excess investment was received from three Mauritius-based investors.
