The 40-year-old female teacher from a prominent city-based school who was arrested on June 28 for allegedly sexually harassing and assaulting a male minor student was presented in court on Wednesday, where she was remanded in police custody for a day.
According to the police, the accused’s friend — who allegedly coaxed the minor into a sexual relationship with the teacher — is currently absconding. The teacher has been booked under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, along with provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Juvenile Justice Act.
The survivor initially confided in a close friend, who advised him to inform the school counsellor, but he refused. However, sometime later, he did speak to the counsellor, who immediately alerted the school authorities and the minor’s parents. The school conducted an internal inquiry and promptly terminated the teacher’s employment. Meanwhile, the parents chose not to approach the police at the time, believing the issue would end once their son completed Std X.
The timeline
The entire incident began in December last year, after the teacher began developing an attraction towards the minor, 16, during preparations for the school’s annual function. “It was during dance practice sessions that she started feeling drawn to the boy. She tried to express her feelings to him, but he kept rejecting her advances. That’s when the accused confided in her friend, the second accused,” a police officer said.
According to the officer, the second accused approached the boy, telling him, “You two are made for each other, and a relationship between a young boy and a middle-aged woman is quite common these days.” “Even if he consented after all the manipulation, the consent of a minor is no consent,” the officer stated.
The second accused will be arrested soon, officials said. The survivor was studying in Std X, while the accused lives in the western suburbs. According to the police, the two entered into a relationship after December, during which the teacher would take the boy to five-star hotels where most of the assaults took place. The boy, in his statement, also revealed that during some of these ‘trips’ to hotels, she would make him drink alcohol before exploiting him.
Mental health toll
The abuse continued for several months and eventually began to affect the minor’s mental health. Police also alleged that the accused fed the boy some ‘pills’ which she thought would help the boy’s anxiety. A separate medical examination will be conducted to figure out the type of pills the accused fed the minor, which were not prescribed, police officials said.
The arrested accused continued trying to contact the minor even after he passed out of the school. About a week ago, she made another attempt, following which the family decided to approach the police and report the matter. Meanwhile, the minor is undergoing medical examinations, the results of which will be included in the charge sheet as evidence.
