As rainfall lashed the city for the second consecutive day yesterday, Mumbaikars finally have some good news; the city should not face any water cuts for at least the next 350 days. The water level in all seven lakes is the highest the catchment areas have witnessed in the last five years.

After the delayed monsoons, residents faced water scarcity after the BMC imposed 20 per cent water cuts on residential connections and 50 per cent on commercial users in July.
However, after the monsoon made up for its delay with heavy rainfall, filling up the lakes, the civic body withdrew the cuts on July 30.
The water in lakes now stands at 13.97 lakh million litres as on September 1, which should be sufficient for the coming year.

Currently, Tulsi, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Vihar and Middle Vaitarna lakes have overflowed, with the city receiving around 74.57 per cent of its average annual rainfall. With the downpour showing no signs of abating, Upper Vaitarna is also expected to overflow in the next couple of days.

Speaking to mid-day, A S Tawadiya, deputy hydraulic engineer, said, &ldquo;As rainfall in catchments areas has increased the water level, we have enough supply for the city. We usually calculate the supply from October to July.&rdquo;
