Accused Mohan Chauhan’s brother tells mid-day that he is an addict, thief and should be hanged to death for the crime he has committed

A day after a 32-year-old woman allegedly raped and brutally assaulted by accused Mohan Chauhan succumbed to her injuries at Rajawadi Hospital, Chauhan’s brother told mid-day that he was a habitual offender and that he had thrown him out of his house a couple of years back when he threatened to rape his daughter. “He is an addict, thief and alcoholic, and should be hanged to death,” he added.
Police sources said that the incident looked like a pre-planned murder but the intention behind it was still not clear. They are also yet to find the weapon that was used to stab the deceased woman’s private parts. The cops further said that the accused had destroyed all evidence.

Speaking to mid-day, Chauhan’s brother said, “Previously my brother used to live with me at Asalfa Village, but seven years back he threatened to rape my daughter and so I threw him out of the house. Later, he started living on Khairani Road at Sakinaka and took up a job as a driver. A couple of months back he was caught stealing vehicle parts and thrown out of the job. He drinks alcohol and takes drugs daily.”
“He has two daughters and a son living with his wife in Uttar Pradesh. For the crime he has committed, he should get death penalty,” he added. Assistant Superintendent of Police (City), Jaunpur district, Dr Sanjay Kumar, said, “On Saturday night, the Maharashtra Police contacted us and inquired about Chauhan. No FIR was found against him in any police station of the district. This information has been shared with them.”
A police source said, “After the incident, the accused went to his cousin sister’s place at Sangharsh Nagar in Sakinaka and asked for some food. He also took a bath and washed his clothes. Soon after having a meal he left the house and boarded an auto for Andheri station. That is when the cops caught him.”
“Following his arrest, he told the police that everything happened under the influence of alcohol. We believe the reason behind the murder is very strong, but it’s still not clear,” the source added. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Jyotshna Rasam, who is heading the Special Investigation Team formed to probe the incident, said, “Our team is working on finding out the intention behind the murder.”

Meanwhile, on Sunday, Bhim Army and Jay Bhim Sanghatana staged a protest against the incident outside the Sakinaka police station. They demanded that Rs 50 lakh be given as compensation to the deceased woman’s children. They both currently live with her mother, who is physically challenged. Chandramukhi Devi, a member of National Commission of Women visited the Sakinaka police station on Sunday. She said, “We met the woman’s children and will give them money from the Nirbhaya fund. We will also speak to the DGP. Rape cases have increased in areas like Amravati and Vasai over the past couple of months.”
Accused was wanted by state cops in another case
Mohan Chauhan, the accused in the rape and murder of a woman in Sakinaka, came to Mumbai about a decade-and-a-half ago to earn a living, but instead he took to the criminal life. A native of Jaunpur district in Uttar Pradesh, Mohan came to Mumbai to work with his brother, Madan, who is a builder. Their father Katwaru Chauhan lives in Rarikala village in Badlapur. Ramesh Yadav, the head of Suratpur Palia village [the native place of Mohan’s mother], said that Mohan had come there in November last year, but returned to Mumbai after four days. Last month, the Maharashtra police had come looking for Mohan in a murder case, but he wasn’t here. ASP (Jaunpur) Dr Sanjay Kumar said that on Saturday night, Maharashtra police contacted and inquired about Mohan. During the investigation, no FIR was found against him in any police station of Jaunpur district, he said, adding that they passed on this information to their counterpart in Maharashtra.
