The Ministry of Railways has announced a rationalisation of passenger train fares across various classes, effective from July 1, 2025. The revised fares will be implemented as per the updated Passenger Fare Table published by the Indian Railway Conference Association (IRCA).
According to the notification, there will be no change in fares for suburban single-journey tickets and season tickets, both suburban and non-suburban. However, for Second Class Ordinary non-suburban trains (Non-AC), there will be a marginal increase of half a paisa per passenger kilometre (PKM), depending on the distance travelled. There will be no increase in fare for journeys up to 500 kilometres. For distances between 501 and 1500 kilometres, the fare will increase by Rs 5; for distances between 1501 and 2500 kilometres, it will increase by Rs 10; and for distances between 2501 and 3000 kilometres, the increase will be Rs 15.
Similarly, Sleeper Class and First Class (Ordinary) fares will also see an increase of half a paisa per Passenger Kilometer. For Mail and Express trains in the non-AC segment, including Second Class, Sleeper Class, and First Class, fares will go up by one paisa per Passenger Kilometer. In the case of AC classes, including AC Chair Car, AC 3-tier, AC 2-tier, and AC First Class (including Executive Class and EA), fares will rise by two paise per Passenger Kilometer.
The revised fare structure will apply to a wide range of train services, including premium and semi-premium trains such as Tejas Rajdhani, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat, Humsafar, Amrit Bharat, Mahamana, Gatimaan, Antyodaya, Garib Rath, Jan Shatabdi, Yuva Express, and coaches like Anubhuti and AC Vistadome.
There will be no change in reservation charges, superfast surcharges, or other ancillary fees, which will continue to be levied separately wherever applicable. Goods and Services Tax (GST) will also continue as per existing guidelines.
The IRCA has been directed to print and supply the revised Passenger Fare Table, and zonal railways have been instructed to collect and distribute the fare tables to all relevant staff before the new rates come into effect. Tickets issued before July 1, 2025, will remain valid at the earlier rates, and no fare difference will be charged on such tickets. However, any new ticket issued on or after July 1, whether booked online, at stations, or by ticket-checking staff on trains, will be charged as per the revised rates.
Railway authorities have also been asked to update fare charts displayed at stations and ensure that manual ticketing systems, as well as computerised systems like PRS and UTS, reflect the new rates. Special efforts are being made to ensure that all concerned staff are fully informed and trained in implementing the changes.
This decision has been taken with the concurrence of the Finance Directorate of the Ministry of Railways. The Ministry has also instructed all zonal railways to give wide publicity to the fare revision through press releases, media campaigns, station announcements, and official notifications.
