After a report in this paper highlighted how years of neglect left Gorai’s jetty access route broken and dangerous, repairs finally get underway

The Borivli-Gorai jetty, a key water transport route for residents of both areas, is finally seeing much-needed repair work. To access the Ro-Ro jetty, residents previously had to take a narrow, crumbling pathway that connected Gorai village to the jetty.
The road had been constructed in 2009 for the inauguration of the Global Vipassana Pagoda, but saw little maintenance after that, gradually deteriorating with regular use. Recently, after complaints about how unsafe the road was for both pedestrians and vehicles, authorities laid down a tarred walkway to improve access.
Oldin Vasaikar, chairperson of the Gorai Fishermen’s Committee, said, “The tar road starts melting in Mumbai’s heat and becomes slippery, leading to accidents. A truck recently slid off the path. These incidents show the urgent need for a proper, safe road that supports daily movement without the constant fear of mishaps.”
This paper had reported on June 20 that residents were struggling with the dangerously narrow path, overgrown mangroves, and poor visibility, especially risky during rains and at night. Since then, work has visibly resumed on the road, offering hope for safer travel.
Rossi D’Souza, a faculty member at Don Bosco School, Borivli, had previously flagged the road as “too dangerous.” Reacting to the ongoing development, he said, “We’re very happy the work has started. On July 11, the local MLA Sanjay Upadhyay and Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane inaugurated the redevelopment project.
The sooner it finishes, the safer it will be.” Though roadworks are halted during the monsoon, the work on the road has continued. mid-day reached out to the BMC for a comment, but received none by press time.
