As BMC poll nears, mid-day takes a look at the politically and historically significant G North and South wards

Mid-Day’s Know Your Ward Series | BMC elections 2026: Inside Mumbai’s G North and South wards

The G South and North wards extend from Haji Ali on the western side of the island city to the Mahim causeway. Historically considered politically active and the home turf of the former undivided Shiv Sena, these wards boast several iconic locations that have contributed significantly to the history of Mumbai. The G North ward is home to Shivaji Park, which is not only the largest open space in Mumbai, but is a crucial landmark in the city’s regional political history. It marks the location where Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray held his first rally in 1966, which was instrumental in shaping Shiv Sena’s future in Mumbai for decades to come.

The area has largely been dominated by a Marathi-speaking population, but is now undergoing rapid demographic change due to the construction of a large number of high-rise buildings. Combined, the North and South administrative wards contain 18 electoral wards and sent 14 elected Shiv Sena and MNS corporators to the BMC general body in 2017. Only one BJP corporator was elected from this area, namely, Sheetal Gambhir, from ward 190. The G South ward is also the home turf of Sena scion and MLA Aaditya Thackeray. The G North ward is also where MNS chief Raj Thackeray resides, at Shivaji Park.

Over the past year, the Mumbai Coastal Road project in the G South ward has added over 5 km of a sea-facing promenade to the city, becoming the third such stretch in Mumbai, after Marine Drive in SoBo and Carter Road in Bandra.

The ward is home to one of the oldest fishing villages of Mumbai, Worli Koliwada, viewed as a sanctuary for the Kolis, considered the sons of the soil. It also has the first seafood promenade operated by the indigenous residents of Mahim Koliwada, at Mahim beach, where Kolis are allowed to sell their local cuisine at stalls set up by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The G North ward also comprises Dharavi, the largest slum in India, due for redevelopment.

Over the past five years, the area has seen tremendous public awareness regarding the issue of the city’s worsening air pollution, becoming a hub for participatory politics, with those residing around Shivaji Park demanding that the civic body find a permanent solution to the problem of bad AQI arising from red soil pollution at the park. The soil was dumped at the playground to retain its historical look.
