A 73-year-old woman lost her life after a fire broke out in a residential building near the High Point Hotel in Lokhandwala, Andheri, in Mumbai on Saturday morning, civic officials said.
According to the Mumbai Fire Brigade, the incident was reported at around 11:15 am on January 17, 2026. The fire occurred in a closed room on the second floor of a G+7-storey building located near the High Point Hotel.
Fire officials said the blaze was confined to Room No. 402 on the second floor. Multiple fire-fighting units were rushed to the spot immediately after the alert was received, and operations to contain the fire were promptly initiated.
The fire was brought under control by 12:09 pm, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the structure. A subsequent official update issued at 2:10 pm confirmed that the blaze had been fully extinguished.
However, the incident proved fatal for a 73-year-old woman. According to information from the concerned Assistant Medical Officer at Cooper Hospital, the victim, identified as Hiru Chetalani, was declared brought dead.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained and is currently under investigation. Civic authorities said further details would be shared after a thorough assessment of the incident.
Thane: Minor transformer fire reported in Devdaya Nagar, no injuries
A fire broke out in an electricity transformer in Devdaya Nagar, Thane (West), on Friday afternoon, prompting a swift response from civic and emergency authorities. Officials confirmed that the blaze was fully extinguished within minutes and no injuries were reported.
According to the Disaster Management Cell of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), the incident was reported at around 12:43 pm on January 17, 2025. The information was received by the control room following a call from a local resident. The fire occurred in a transformer belonging to Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), also known as Mahavitaran, near Canara Bank, opposite Laxmi Narayan Residency in the Devdaya Nagar area.
Soon after the alert, personnel from the Disaster Management Department, MSEDCL staff and the local fire brigade rushed to the spot. One fire engine was deployed to tackle the situation. Firefighters worked in coordination with electricity department officials to ensure the blaze was contained and to prevent any escalation or secondary incidents in the densely populated neighbourhood.
Officials said the fire was completely brought under control by around 1:05 pm. As a precautionary measure, the area was secured while cooling operations were carried out and the transformer was inspected for damage.
Civic authorities reiterated that there were no casualties or injuries in the incident and confirmed that the situation is now stable. Further assessment of the transformer and restoration-related measures are being undertaken by MSEDCL officials as per standard safety protocols.
