<p><a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/brihanmumbai-municipal-corporation-orders-shutdown-of-164-unauthorised-schools-23626671" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation</a> Commissioner Ashwini Bhide conducted a surprise inspection of a sanitation workers&rsquo; outpost at Kannamwar Nagar in Vikhroli (East) on Wednesday morning, civic officials said.</p>
<p>According to the BMC, Bhide interacted with sanitation workers stationed at the outpost in the S Ward and reviewed ongoing cleanliness operations in the area.</p>
<p>During the visit, she directed civic officials to prioritise the cleanliness of roads, surrounding areas and junctions across Mumbai, with a stronger focus on sanitation efforts.</p>
<h2>Emphasis on public awareness and use of modern machinery</h2>
<p><a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-bmc-pushes-back-to-basics-plan-civic-chief-directs-to-complete-all-road-works-by-july-1-and-before-monsoon-23625252" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">The BMC</a> said the Municipal Commissioner also instructed officials to work towards eliminating garbage dumping spots through sustained public awareness initiatives and regular monitoring.</p>
<p>She further stressed the need for effective utilisation of available modern sanitation machinery and manpower to improve waste management operations and maintain cleanliness standards in the city.</p>
<p>Deputy Commissioner Prashant Gaikwad, Deputy Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Kiran Dighavkar, Deputy Commissioner (Zone 6) Santoshkumar Dhonde, Assistant Commissioner Samreen Sayyed and other civic officials were present during the inspection, the BMC added.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, to review measures aimed at preventing foul odour from the municipal solid waste management facility in Kanjurmarg, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-bmc-commissioner-ashwini-bhide-conducts-surprise-sanitation-inspection-in-wadala-chembur-23627996" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Ashwini Bhide</a> conducted a surprise inspection at the site early on Wednesday, according to the BMC.</p>
<p>The civic body said Bhide spent nearly one-and-a-half hours inspecting various operations at the facility and reviewing solid waste management processes. She also directed officials to improve operational efficiency and strengthen mitigation measures where required.</p>
<p>According to the BMC, the commissioner inspected the waste segregation centre, composting unit, waste-to-energy plant, and the bio-reactor landfill site during the visit.</p>
<h2>Odour mitigation systems reviewed</h2>
<p>The BMC said bio-enzyme-based liquid is being sprayed on waste at the site to minimise foul smell and reduce inconvenience to residents living nearby. In addition, fragrance-based solutions are being sprayed through a misting system installed around the waste receiving area.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-civic-body-chief-ashwini-bhide-seeks-political-support-for-voter-list-revision-drive-23627354" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">civic body</a> stated that 11 misting cannon systems are currently operational at the project site for odour control. Bhide also reviewed the functioning of a helpline set up to address complaints related to foul smell from surrounding areas, the BMC added.</p>
<h2>Over 6,000 metric tonnes of waste processed daily</h2>
<p>According to the BMC, the Kanjurmarg municipal solid waste management project is spread across 118.14 hectares, or nearly 292 acres.</p>
<p>The civic body said around 5,200 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste are processed daily through bio-reactor technology, while another 1,000 metric tonnes are treated using composting technology.</p>
<p>Methane gas generated during waste processing is partially used for electricity generation within <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-bmc-seeks-bigger-role-for-corporators-in-rs-17000-crore-road-concreting-project-23616353" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">the project</a>, while the remaining gas is scientifically flared, the BMC said.</p>
<p>To prevent waste from coming into contact with air and to control odour and gas emissions, soil cover is being placed over the waste, officials added. Bhide also inspected these measures and issued further directions during the visit.</p>
<p>Deputy Municipal Commissioner Prashant Gaikwad, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Kiran Dighavkar, and other civic officials were present during the inspection, according to the BMC.</p>
