Crime Branch Unit 1 of Kashimira nabbed two chain-snatching suspects within 12 hours of the incident. A stolen gold chain and a mobile phone were also recovered from their possession. According to police, on July 15, around 10.15 am, a 72-year-old woman had gone to her maternal uncle’s house in Kandivli to attend a family function. Later, she visited Bhaktivedanta Hospital in Mira Road East with her husband and nephew for treatment of a stomach ailment.

After the check-up, as they were walking toward the parking lot, two men on a motorcycle approached from behind. The pillion rider forcibly snatched a gold chain weighing five tolas, worth approximately Rs 2.5 lakh, from the woman’s neck and pushed her when she resisted.

A case was registered under Sections 392 and 34 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Kashimira police station. Under the guidance of senior officers, including DCP (Crime) Sandeep Doifode and Senior Inspector Pramod Badhak of Crime Branch Unit 1, a parallel technical investigation was launched. Analysis of CCTV footage and local intelligence helped identify and trace the suspects, who were apprehended the same day while attempting to flee on the Suryanagari Express to Jodhpur.

They were identified as Shahzad Imam Mohammad Arif Haidari alias Vicky alias Gadhir Amrohi, 41, a resident of Mohalla Bagla near Akhtar Hotel, Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, and Abu Torab Tajdar Hussain, 23, a resident of Thakur Village, Kandivli East. .

“Haidari is a habitual chain snatcher with more than 18 cases registered against him across multiple police stations, including Navghar, Nayanagar, Mira Road, and Kashimira, between 2015 and 2017. He has previously been convicted and sentenced by the court,” an officer said.
