The coming months bring good news for motorists who find themselves getting stuck on the Mumbai-Nashik highway stretch between Thane and Padgha. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) plans to construct an elevated road to help in resolving traffic jams in a stretch that remains busy during rush hour in the mornings and evenings.
“This project will help in solving traffic jam issues in Kalyan and Dombivli. Motorists travelling from Kalyan, Dombivli, Thane and Bhiwandi stand to benefit. Once this road is connected to the Samruddhi Mahamarg (Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway), motorists heading out of the city can avail of the option of using this road,” said Public Works Minister Ravindra Chavan.

The MMRDA has already initiated the process of appointing a consultant to prepare a detailed project report for this 30-kilometre elevated road. In a comprehensive transport study, the project was recommended in order to decongest NH3, which witnesses a high density of vehicular traffic—including axel and multi-axle vehicles—as there are numerous logistics units in Bhiwandi and areas adjacent to it. Those who live in Kalyan and Dombivli and travel to Thane also use the NH3 via theRajnoli Junction.
During the monsoon motorists have reported that travelling from Padgha to Thane and Mumbai via NH3 is daunting. The condition of the road deteriorates owing to the rain, leading to longer traffic jams.
