A rare Laggar falcon was sighted at the Gogte salt pan in Nalasopara on November 1, in what is believed to be the first recorded sighting of the species in Palghar district. The sighting was documented by naturalist Vaibhav Haldipur, who was leading a birdwatching trail for Jungle Buddies along with fellow birdwatcher Rikita Sheth. The bird was spotted at 12.35 pm, sitting on the ground in a scrubland habitat.
Haldipur said the species was last sighted in Mumbai in 2001, making the latest observation particularly significant for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts. The Laggar falcon (Falco jugger) is an uncommon raptor in Maharashtra, with published records from relatively few locations across the state. Although distributed across parts of the Indian subcontinent, the species has experienced population decline in several parts of its range and is classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List.
