The Sir JJ Marg Police have rearrested 21-year-old Bangladeshi national Rubina Irshad Sheikh, who had escaped from Sir JJ Hospital while under judicial custody last week.

According to police, Rubina was originally arrested in connection with a case registered at Vashi Police Station, Navi Mumbai, under various sections of the BNS, Passport Act, and Foreigners Act. She had been lodged in Byculla District Jail and was brought to JJ Hospital on August 11 for treatment of a cold, fever, skin ailments, and pregnancy-related care. Being five months pregnant, she was admitted to ward number 10. On August 14, while being escorted for a sonography, she requested the woman constable on duty to use the bathroom and took advantage of the situation to flee the hospital premises.

A case was immediately registered at Sir JJ Marg Police Station under Section 262 of the BNS.

Under the guidance of DCP Zone-1 Dr. Praveen Mundhe, ACP Tanveer Sheikh, and Sr. PI Rais Sheikh, a special team led by PSI Prashant Nerkar of Sir JJ Marg Police Station launched a search operation. Officers disguised themselves and monitored her possible hideouts and workplaces for three days, gathering intelligence through informants. Based on technical inputs, the accused was finally traced and arrested on August 18, 2025, from Navghar Ali Road, Talawali, Ghansoli, Navi Mumbai, in a police-laid trap.

Senior Inspector Rais Shaikh of Sir JJ Marg Police confirmed that the accused has been placed back in custody and that further investigation is underway.
