A police sub-inspector from Panvel City police station (Unit-2), identified as Sachin Vaman Waikar, was caught red-handed on Sunday night while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 through a private individual. Waikar had allegedly threatened to escalate charges in an FIR filed against the complainant’s father and ensure his interim bail was denied unless a bribe was paid. He initially demanded Rs 1 lakh but later agreed to settle for Rs 50,000.
Acting on the complaint received on July 21, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) laid a trap the same day near Shri Maruti Cushion, Shivaji Chowk, Old Panvel, where the bribe transaction was expected to take place. As per ACB officials, the bribe amount was handed over inside a Wagon R car and was accepted through middleman Ravindra alias Sachin Subhash Butte, 30, a resident of Karanjadi, Sector 1, Panvel. Both PSI Waikar and Butte were caught red-handed around 10.30 pm on July 21.
The trap and arrest were successfully carried out by a joint team from the Thane Range ACB and the Raigad-Alibaug Unit, under the supervision of Superintendent of Police (SP), Thane ACB, Shivraj Patil, along with Additional SPs Sanjay Govilkar and Suhas Shinde, Deputy SP Sarita Bhosale of Raigad ACB, Police Inspector Nishant Dhanawade, and Assistant Police Sub-Inspector PSI Vinod Jadhav. “Further investigation is underway and strict legal action will follow,” said Shivraj Patil.
