Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Thursday that the Modi government has fundamentally democratised the use of technology, effectively harnessing its immense power to benefit the business sector across India.
Over the last 11 years, this strategic approach has successfully positioned Bharat as a leading global digital economy. His remarks coincide with the significant milestone of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government completing 11 years in power, a landmark achieved on June 9.
Shah further emphasised on X (formerly Twitter) that the administration had profoundly transformed every critical sector of the economy and society – from healthcare and education to trade and commerce – primarily through the widespread adoption and implementation of a comprehensive digital revolution.
An official statement corroborated these assertions, underscoring India's truly remarkable progress over the past 11 years in its ambitious journey towards becoming a fully digitally empowered society and a robust knowledge economy.
This transformative period has seen a concerted effort to expand internet access, reaching even the most remote villages, and has fundamentally revolutionised public service delivery through innovative digital platforms. Consequently, the country has achieved an unprecedented success in bridging the long-standing urban-rural divide, ensuring greater inclusivity in digital access.
The nation's digital economy itself, a key indicator of this progress, significantly contributed 11.74 per cent to the national income during the 2022-23 fiscal year.
This vital contribution is projected to grow further, reaching an impressive 13.42 per cent by 2024-25, a growth largely propelled by continuous advancements in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and robust digital infrastructure.
A strong and resilient digital infrastructure is unequivocally recognised as the very backbone of any modern economy. Over the past 11 years, India has meticulously worked to significantly expand its mobile networks and has dramatically improved internet connectivity, especially within its vast rural areas, reported PTI.
Looking towards a tech-driven future, the government has consistently broadened the nation's digital horizon. This includes not only boosting essential digital infrastructure but also actively enhancing digital skills across the population, ensuring India becomes even more digitally enabled and globally connected nation.
Meanwhile this growth, with proper Internet connections, witnessed an astonishing jump from just 25.15 crore in March 2014 to a remarkable 96.96 crore by June 2024. Furthermore, as of May 2025, the total cumulative amount transferred through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes has impressively surpassed the Rs 44 lakh crore mark.
