BJP retains power in Assam; Himanta wins for fifth time

BJP wins 58 seats and Cong 31; performance of newly-floated parties was disappointing, with only jailed Raijor Dal president winning

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday thanked the people of Assam for supporting the National Democratic Alliance in the Assembly polls. After winning a fifth consecutive term in Assembly polls, BJP leader and senior Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that he did not want to talk about who would become the next chief minister of the state as the decision will be made by the party’s central parliamentary board.
