The Central government has announced that all administrative offices located in Delhi and New Delhi will remain closed on May 28, 2026 on account of <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-bmc-grants-permission-at-109-locations-for-bakri-eid-animal-slaughter-23629510" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Eid-ul-Zuha (Bakrid)</a>.
The holiday has been shifted from the earlier notified date of May 27, 2026.
According to the official notification, issued by Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, the revised holiday will apply to all Central government administrative offices functioning in the national capital region.
The change was made to align the public holiday with the observance of the Bakrid festival.
<h2>Bakrid celebrations</h2>
Id-ul-Zuha, also known as Bakrid, is one of the most important Islamic festivals and is celebrated across India with prayers, charitable activities and family gatherings.
Government offices are typically closed on the occasion as part of the gazetted holiday calendar.
<h2>Mumbai Police set up helpline numbers for Bakrid</h2>
Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/mumbai-police-raid-ghatkopar-pan-shop-owner-booked-for-selling-e-cigarettes-bmc-demolishes-shop-23630515" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Mumbai Police</a> has issued a public advisory ahead of Bakri Eid 2026, which is expected to be celebrated next week.
The advisory has been released to help traders, transporters, buyers and others involved in the legal transportation and sale of animals during the festival period.
Police officials said that people facing any difficulties while transporting animals through legal channels or at authorised animal sale locations designated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) can contact the Mumbai Police main control room.

<h2>Assistance for traders and buyers</h2>
According to the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/mahim-murder-case-22-year-old-man-dies-after-group-brutally-assaults-him-attacks-with-sharp-weapon-in-mumbais-mahim-23630514" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">police</a>, traders, businessmen and buyers sometimes face issues during the movement and sale of animals ahead of Bakri Eid.
The officials have appealed to citizens to follow legal procedures and contact the helpline in case of any harassment, obstruction or other concerns.
<h2>Police monitoring festival arrangements</h2>
Mumbai Police is expected to maintain strict monitoring and security arrangements across the city during the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai-guide/things-to-do/article/immerse-in-a-global-science-festival-while-unwinding-this-summer-in-mumbai-23630538" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">festival</a> period to ensure smooth movement and law and order.
<h2>BMC grants permission at 109 locations for Bakrid</h2>
The <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/brihanmumbai-municipal-corporation-orders-shutdown-of-164-unauthorised-schools-23626671" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation</a> (BMC) has started preparations at the Deonar Abattoir ahead of Bakri Eid 2026, with arrangements being made for security, sanitation, medical aid, water supply and animal management, civic officials said on Friday.
According to the BMC, the animal market for buffaloes and goats will be held at the Deonar Abattoir from May 17 to May 30. Bakri Eid is expected to be observed on May 28 this year.
The civic body said a review meeting was recently conducted at the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-long-suffering-mulund-residents-visit-bmc-hq-to-ensure-fob-gets-built-23588052" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">BMC headquarters</a> under the guidance of Additional Municipal Commissioner Dr. Ashwini Joshi to assess preparedness by municipal departments and other agencies involved in festival arrangements.
According to the BMC, permission has been granted at 109 locations across Mumbai for religious animal slaughter between May 28 and May 30.
Civic officials said citizens seeking permission for slaughter at designated or other locations can apply through the MyBMC mobile application, where registration will be mandatory.
<a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-prabhadevi-garden-in-pieces-five-months-after-reopening-as-bmc-mmrcl-blame-game-continues-23629227" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">The BMC</a> has also made online arrangements available on its official website for import permits of buffaloes and goats, as well as slot booking for religious slaughter. Officials said allotment of animal sheds will be done through a computerized &ldquo;first come, first served&rdquo; system.
However, the civic body clarified that buffalo slaughter will be permitted only at the Deonar Abattoir in accordance with the existing religious slaughter policy.
<h2>Control room, helplines and security measures planned</h2>
The BMC said a 24x7 control room will be operational during the festival period to address complaints and handle emergencies.
Dedicated helpline numbers &mdash; 9076000481, 9076000482, 9076000483 and 9076000484 &mdash; will be available for public assistance.
According to civic officials, 21 police outposts, two watch towers, nearly 500 police personnel and around 200 civic security guards will be deployed at the site for security arrangements.
The <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-deonar-abattoir-gets-vet-relief-as-officers-recalled-for-15-days-23584945" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Deonar</a> facility will also be monitored through a network of more than 500 CCTV cameras, including permanent, bullet, dome and PTZ cameras. Temporary surveillance cameras will also be installed during the festival period.
