At least 18 passengers were killed as a private bus they were travelling in was struck by a massive landslide in Himachal Pradesh's Bilaspur district on Tuesday evening, officials said, reported the PTI.
The accident took place in Bhalughat area in Jhandutta assembly segment, they said, adding the bus carrying 30-35 passengers was on its way from Marotan to Ghumarwin.
Police and district administration officials are at the spot and rescue operations are going on in full swing, the officials said.
So far 18 bodies have been recovered from the debris, they added.
Whole mountain came crashing down on the bus and chances of survival of passengers are bleak, said a policeman engaged in rescue operations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended his heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the mishap.
In a post on X, the PMO wrote, "Saddened by the loss of lives due to a mishap in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh. My thoughts are with the affected people and their families during this difficult time. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000."

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has expressed grief over the accident and directed the officials to expedite the rescue operations, an official statement issued on Tuesday stated.
"The state government stands firmly with the affected families in this hour of distress and will provide every possible assistance," he said.
The Chief Minister also prayed for the peace of the departed souls and instructed the district administration to expedite relief and rescue operations. He directed officials to ensure that all the injured in the incident are immediately taken to hospitals for treatment and provided with full medical care, according to the ANI.
The officials said that heavy machinery had been deployed at the site, and efforts were on to clear the debris amid difficult terrain and intermittent rainfall.
Intermittent rains have been lashing the area since Monday.
