In 12 months, Rs 1.3 lakh collected in fines for smoking in public

Civic body collects more than Rs 1 lakh from 810 offenders in two months, but FDA manages only R26,084 from entire district over period of a year

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Pune division, in collaboration with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), has collected Rs 1.30 lakh in fines in the last one year from people smoking in public places.

Though the FDA claims that its office has been taking proactive measures in penalising people flouting Section 4 of the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003, the figures state otherwise.
